The Colosseum

How could you visit Rome without seeing the Colosseum? With or without a guided tour, it’s an absolute must-see! This amphitheatre is the largest in the Roman Empire. It could hold up to 65,000 spectators and took eight years to build. It was once the stage for games, festivities, and gladiatorial battles.

The Colosseum is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Its original purpose was to entertain the people and, in doing so, boost the Emperor’s popularity. Many gladiator fights took place here, often involving wild animals such as lions, elephants, and tigers. The amphitheatre features a colossal structure with 80 arches.

To visit the Colosseum, it is recommended to book tickets in advance and opt for combined tickets that also grant access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
