The Clerics' Tower

Built in the Baroque style, Porto’s Clerics Church (Igreja dos Clérigos) was constructed between 1735 and 1748 and is considered one of the city’s most beautiful monuments, particularly thanks to its tower and its clock that dominate the entire building.

The church, commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics, stands on what was once the “Hill of the Hanged,” where condemned prisoners were executed and buried.

Rising 76 meters high, with 49 bells forming its grand carillon and nearly 200 steps, the Clerics Tower is the tallest in the country. Those who climb it are rewarded with an exceptional panoramic view of the city—a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts!
