Southern Corsica Through Its Villages
Lecci – Between Beaches and Vineyards
The commune of Lecci stretches along 10 kilometres of coastline, with 5 kilometres of white sandy beaches. Just 30 minutes from Figari Airport, between beach and lagoon, the beaches of Saint-Cyprien, the bay of Cala Rossa, and the bay of U Benedettu offer a complete change of scenery and a wide range of water activities. Lecci, which means “holm oak,” is also a land of vineyards producing exceptional wines from local grape varieties such as Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu, and Vermentinu. Visit the estates of Torraccia and Fior di Lecci.
Sotta – Around 15 Minutes from Figari Sud Corse Airport and Porto-Vecchio
One of the most typical villages in Southern Corsica, Sotta is surrounded by 32 hamlets showcasing remarkable examples of Corsican architecture, such as the hamlet of Chera. Discover historical remains and archaeological sites like Tappa and Ceccia, which offer insight into a rich and ancient heritage.
Figari – Halfway Between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio
Just minutes from Figari Sud Corse Airport, the village of Figari includes numerous hamlets clustered at the foot of the Omu di Cagna peak. Its vineyard is one of the oldest in Corsica and carries the AOP Corse Figari designation. Discover wines aged in oak barrels. The coastal area, part of the Bonifacio Strait Nature Reserve, offers unspoiled landscapes ideal for hiking along marked trails—always with respect for the fragile ecosystem.
Pianottoli-Caldarello
Close to Figari and Sotta, Pianottoli-Caldarello is easily accessible from Figari Sud Corse Airport. This peaceful spot on the Mediterranean coast is home to charming houses and offers scenic hikes along well-marked trails. Also not to miss: Pianottoli-Caldarello beach with its turquoise waters, and San Giovanni beach, nestled between the Genoese tower of Caldarello and the Capineru headland.
Monaccia d’Aullène – Just After the Lion of Roccapina
Wells, washhouses, and bread ovens—recently restored—bear witness to the cultural heritage and soul of Monaccia d’Aullène. Nature lovers will be enchanted by the Genoese tower of Olmeto, perched on massive granite boulders, and by the mythical sculpture of the “Lion of Roccapina,” standing sentinel over the bay of Erbaju. A little further along, step inside the small house A Casa di Roccapina, pick up the free audio guide, and embark on a unique exhibition experience that blends hidden treasures and local legend.

A picturesque town nicknamed the “City of Cliffs.” Narrow, steep lanes, tall houses perched on limestone cliffs, and 120 kilometres of coastline form the Bonifacio Strait Nature Reserve. With its blend of prehistoric, Italian, and French influences, Bonifacio is a truly enchanting place. From the marina to the old town, the famous “King Aragon’s Staircase,” the beaches of Spérone and Piantarella, or the coastal paths—Col Saint Roch and Cap Pertusato—this one-of-a-kind destination in Corsica is sure to charm you.

Cradled by the Bavella Massif, the Ospedale Forest, and the Cuscione Plateau, and located in the heart of the Corsican Regional Nature Park, Alta Rocca’s highest point is Monte Alcudina at 2,134 metres. Its rich natural biodiversity is extraordinary. Sixteen villages make up the region, each with its own architectural and historical interest. Casteddu de Capula, the Cucuruzzu site, Casteddu d’Araghju, the King Aragon Steps, the Bastion de l’Étendard and the Torrione Viewpoint in Bonifacio, and the Alta Rocca Museum in Levie—these memorial sites tell the story of Porto-Vecchio and its region.
A Town of Traditions
The Mardi Gras Rooster Toss
In the past, it was customary to give the schoolteacher a final “fat” meal before Lent. Pupils would toss a rooster at their teacher in the schoolyard, and the teacher would pretend to chase them back to class. This is the oldest tradition in Porto-Vecchio.
Religious Traditions:
A Settimana Santa – Holy Week, a sacred tradition. From the early days of preparation to the grand procession that lights up the citadel, the tradition continues with the making of crucetti, stiddi, or campanile in honour of Easter celebrations.
A San Ghjuvanni – Porto-Vecchio’s patron saint’s day, celebrated each year on 23 June with both spiritual and festive events around the Saint John’s bonfire.
U Luddareddu – the symbolic farewell to the “little darling month of July.” On the night of 31 July, locals burned the paganacciu—a rag-dressed figure—representing the hardships of the past months. This celebration symbolised purification and renewal.
