The Citadel and the Old Town

Explore the Citadel of Porto-Vecchio

  1. Place de la Mairie: The history of Porto-Vecchio is written between the Bastion of San Giorgo and the Bastion du Palais, both bearing witness to Genoese power.

  2. Rue Renuccio Della Rocca: According to legend, the gaping hole on the left side of the San Antonio Bastion was caused by a cannon shot from the famous Sampiero Corso, as he seized the town from the Genoese in 1553. It was a short-lived victory, as in 1559 the French Crown returned Corsica to the Genoese following the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis.

  3. Rue de la Funtana Vecchia: The Genoese Gate was originally the only entrance to the citadel. At the time, it provided direct access to the port below. Today, it offers a stunning viewpoint over the salt marshes and the Mediterranean.

  4. Rue U Borgu: At the heart of the ramparts, between the San Antonio Bastion and the Bastion de France.

  5. Rue de la Citadelle: The imposing Bastion de France—formerly known as U Baluardo di A Marina—stands tall in the citadel, a witness to the conflicts of 1755, when Corsica emerged as a nation, supported by a population rallied behind Pascal Paoli. But in 1769, under the reign of Louis XV, the French army triumphed at the Battle of Ponte Novu. Pascal Paoli went into exile, and the citadel of Porto-Vecchio fell to the French troops.

  6. Cours Napoléon: At the intersection of Rue Pasteur and Rue de la Citadelle, on the left-hand side, the remains of the old fortification connecting the Bastion de France to the Bastion du Moulin à Vent are still visible.

  7. Impasse Ettori: Old buildings still dominate here; the former house on the left was once used by the Genoese as an infirmary.

  8. Place de la République: Built in the 19th century, it is the central square of the old town. Fully paved since the 1980s, it features a tree renowned throughout the region—the "Bel Ombra", native to the South American pampas. Gifted to the town of Porto-Vecchio in 1901, it now decorates the square and is a source of pride for the people of Porto-Vecchio.

  9. Place de l'Église: The Church of Saint John the Baptist, in baroque style and built of granite, was constructed in the 19th century on the foundations of a former Genoese church. Inside, you’ll find remarkable treasures: a 16th-century processional Christ; stained-glass frescoes dating from 1962, restored in 2004 to restore their brilliance; and Carrara marble on the altar and tabernacle, also dating from the 19th century. Just opposite, the Santa Crucci Chapel (Holy Cross), built in 1656, houses precious artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries: the painting of Maria Regina gifted by Empress Eugénie, and a processional cross. The chapel is still home to the Santa Crucci brotherhood today.

A Town of Traditions

The Mardi Gras Rooster Toss

  • In the past, it was customary to give the schoolteacher a final “fat” meal before Lent. Pupils would toss a rooster at their teacher in the schoolyard, and the teacher would pretend to chase them back to class. This is the oldest tradition in Porto-Vecchio.

Religious Traditions:

  • A Settimana Santa – Holy Week, a sacred tradition. From the early days of preparation to the grand procession that lights up the citadel, the tradition continues with the making of crucetti, stiddi, or campanile in honour of Easter celebrations.

  • A San Ghjuvanni – Porto-Vecchio’s patron saint’s day, celebrated each year on 23 June with both spiritual and festive events around the Saint John’s bonfire.

  • U Luddareddu – the symbolic farewell to the “little darling month of July.” On the night of 31 July, locals burned the paganacciu—a rag-dressed figure—representing the hardships of the past months. This celebration symbolised purification and renewal.

  • Tour de Corse Historique
