The Ajaccio Tourist Office Building

The building is located in the city center. It’s the perfect starting point for a walk through the heart of the city to discover: Place Foch, the Marcatu d’Aiacciu and its gourmet market hall, the old port, the pedestrian-only Rue Fesch, the Bonaparte House, and nearby bars, cafés, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

Formerly a farmers’ hall and once serving as Ajaccio’s covered market, the building originally housed the local vegetable producers.

The City of Ajaccio, by Pierre-André Nicolai – Urban Development / Guided Tours – Certified Guide

"In 1858, the Ajaccio municipality decided to build a new market hall in the Poggiolo district (the former name of Boulevard du Roi Jérôme). Jérôme Maglioli, the city’s architect, was tasked with overseeing the project. He designed the building in the style we still see today: a central high-volume space surrounded on three sides by lower wings.

For construction, the municipality drafted a set of specifications including 25 detailed articles outlining the materials to be used for masonry, glazing, carpentry, painting, and more. For the building’s foundation, some of the finest granite blocks were extracted from the Scudo quarry, located along the Route des Sanguinaires. To facilitate transport, a railway line — now buried beneath the asphalt of the Route des Sanguinaires — was used to bring the stones from the quarry to the port, right across from the construction site. Shaped into cut stones, they still form the base of the building and can be seen both inside and outside. The framework was built using Lariccio pine. Still visible today, it dates back to the original construction. Initially, there were no intermediate floors — the interior was open and the exposed roof structure was clearly visible. Inside the market hall, only farmers from the surrounding villages of Ajaccio were allowed to set up shop, earning the building the nickname “farmers’ market.” In 1997, the municipality deemed the tourist office’s location in the City Hall unsuitable. It was then decided to renovate the central part of the former farmers' market and establish the new tourist office there — a functional and welcoming space designed to become the city’s showcase. The building was inaugurated in July 1999."
