Toulon Opera House

Originally called the "Grand Theatre de Toulon" it was inaugurated on October 1, 1862. Located in the heart of the city, the monument is oriented north/south, with a monumental facade to the south. It is highlighted by a useful usage which is the natural slope of the ground - which allows to install at the south a large staircase that makes out discernable - from the square in a spectacular way, like a cathedral forecourt.
Toulon has not been faint-hearted for its theatre by opening a hall of 1,797 seats, which is only 100 less than the Palais Garnier in Paris. Moreover, the Paris Opera, ordered in 1861 by Charles Garnier, was not inaugurated until 1875, thirteen years after the ‘Grand Théâtre de Toulon’! The building, in neo-classical style with its arches in full hanger, its grey and pink columns as well as its pediment – including many interesting details among which you note geometric friezes of Byzantine inspiration, orientalist style that will be very popular at the end of the century.
The building, designed by architect Léon Feuchères, occupies a floor area of nearly 2000m². It has an infrastructure of masonry stones and metal beams according to the building principles of the time (semi-metallic).
The ‘Grand Théâtre de Toulon’ had its first performance on 12 October 1862 with a revival version of Fromental Halévy's comic opera (1799-1862) "The Queen's Musketeers" composed in 1846.
The Toulon Opera House now offers numerous lyrical performances and renowned ballets.
