Toulon National Navy Museum
There is a famous French military port: the city of Toulon is home of the National Navy Museum. That’s why Air Corsica offers you to discover with its direct summer flights, between Ajaccio and Bastia and Toulon made twice weekly, from April to June and from September to October.
Created at the end of the First Empire and located near the Maritime Prefecture and the Clock Tower, the National Navy Museum of Toulon symbolizes the memory of the Toulon Arsenal, from which it has preserved the majestic gate designed by Lange in 1738.
It fosters an impressive collection of boats, ships and emblematic galleys of the navy tradition in the Mediterranean. Since 2011 the Museum has also been highlighting the city's development, from the naval location in Toulon.
The ground floor of the Museum is dedicated to the creator of the first Arsenal under Louis XIV: the architect Vauban. A model of the Corderie presents the architecture of a building as there are few in France. Its central part contains the large-scale models of a ship and a frigate that were used to instruct the cadets. Visitors can also discover the reconstruction of a galley, replaced by the port prison of Toulon, after 1748. The reconstruction of the Prison Hospital is one of the Museum's new features.
Finally, on the first floor of the Museum, you can observe a reconstitution of Toulon as a place of power and exhibits - especially a punch service and a "bratina" in silver and enamels: representative presents of the Franco-Russian alliance established from 1891 to 1914. In addition to a torpedo of the 1960s, there is also a space reserved for submarines and aircraft carriers - the enthusiasts will also appreciate the maneuver board of the life-size reconstructed Charles-de-Gaulle, as well as a space relating to the life on board a boat, in order to not disconnect the man from his work tool.
